Bridge Replacement

Monroe, Michigan

This project includes the replacement of Norfolk Southern Bridge in Monroe Michigan. The existing structure is a three span ballasted deck through truss built in 1894. This line of tracks carries freight and supports the Detroit automakers. The new structure will be a four span through girder bridge. The project includes the installation of three new piers along the same alignment as the current bridge. Each new pier will sit on top of 18 micropile being installed by Spartan Specialties. The existing abutments will be modified and reused. The new substructure will be constructed under the existing bridge to maintain train traffic, and the spans will be built in a staging area just South of the existing bridge.

A causeway is being constructed to gain access through the river to construct the new piers. Norfolk Southern has granted a five day train outage to replace the bridge. During the outage, the existing bridge will be dismantled for scrap and the new spans will be placed using 6 line goldhofer trailers supplied by Selinsky Force. The project is currently on track to replace the bridge in late February 2015.
